Salak Rujak (Spicy Indonesian Fruit Salad)
Ingredients:
- 5–6 fresh salak (snake fruit)
- 1 cup pineapple chunks
- 1 cup cucumber slices
- 1 cup mango slices (semi-ripe is best)
- 1 tablespoon tamarind paste
- 3 tablespoons palm sugar (or brown sugar)
- 2–3 fresh red chilies (adjust to taste)
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons water
Preparation Steps:
Step 1: Prepare the Salak
- Peel the snake fruit by pressing your thumb into the skin, similar to peeling an orange.
- Remove the inedible seed from each lobe.
- Slice the flesh into bite-sized pieces.
Step 2: Prepare Other Fruits
- Cut the pineapple, mango, and cucumber into thin slices or small chunks.
- Please place them in a large bowl along with the salak pieces.
Step 3: Make the Rujak Sauce
- In a small mortar and pestle (or blender), combine tamarind paste, palm sugar, chilies, salt, and water.
- Grind or blend until it forms a smooth, thick, and spicy-sweet sauce.
Step 4: Combine Everything
- Pour the sauce over the prepared fruits.
- Toss well until every piece of fruit is coated with the tangy, spicy mixture.
Step 5: Serve
- Chill in the refrigerator for 15–20 minutes for better flavor.
- Serve cold as a refreshing snack or side dish.
Tips:
- You can replace mango with papaya or guava if not available.
- Adjust chili quantity depending on your spice tolerance.
